Kantorovich, Leonid Vitaliyevich[kantorohvich]
Economist and mathematician, born in St Petersburg, Russia. He studied there, receiving his doctorate at the age of 18. He was a professor at Leningrad State University (1934--60), director of the mathematical economics laboratory at the Moscow Institute of National Economic Management (1971--6), and from 1976 directed the Institute of System Studies at the Moscow Academy of Sciences. He shared the 1975 Nobel Prize for Economics.
