Arnauld, Antoine

[ah(r)noh], known as the Great Arnauld

(1612--94)

French philosopher, lawyer, mathematician, and priest, associated with the Jansenist movement and community at Port Royal, Paris, France. He was a controversialist, and his activities as head of the Jansenists led to his expulsion from the Sorbonne, persecution, and ultimately refuge in Belgium. While at Port Royal he collaborated with Pascal and Pierre Nicole (1625--95) on the work known as the Port Royal Logic, (1662).
