Möbius, August Ferdinand

[moebius]

(1790--1868)

Mathematician, born in Schulpforta, Germany. As professor at Leipzig he worked on analytical geometry, topology, and theoretical astronomy, but is chiefly known for the discovery of the Möbius strip (a one-sided surface formed by giving a rectangular strip a half-twist, then joining the ends together) and the Möbius net, important in projective geometry. He also introduced barycentric co-ordinates into geometry.
