Riesz, Frigyes

[rees]

(1880--1956)

Mathematician, born in Györ, Hungary. He studied at Zürich, Budapest, and Göttingen, and taught at the University of Kolozsvár (Cluj) from 1911. He worked in functional analysis, integral equations, and subharmonic functions, and developed a new approach to the Lebesgue integral. He published the important textbook Leçons d'analyse fonctionnelle (1952, Lessons of Functional Analysis).
