Shcharansky, Natan[sharanskee], originally Anatoly Borisovich Shcharansky
Soviet dissident, born in Donetsk, Ukraine. A brilliant mathematician disillusioned with Soviet society, he applied for a visa to emigrate to Israel (1973). This was repeatedly refused, he was harrassed by the KGB, and in 1977 was sentenced to 13 years in a labour colony for allegedly spying on behalf of the CIA. Released in 1986 as part of an East--West "spy' exchange, he joined his wife in Israel, where he assumed his new name. In 1989 he was nominated as Israeli ambassador to the UN.
