Wiener, Norbert

(1894--1964)

Mathematical logician, the founder of cybernetics, born in Columbia, Missouri, USA. A child prodigy, he entered university at 11, studied at Harvard, Cornell, Cambridge, and Göttingen universities, and became professor of mathematics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1932--60). During World War 2 he worked on guided missiles, and his study of the handling of information by electronic devices, based on the feedback principle, encouraged comparison between these and human mental processes in Cybernetics (1948) and other works.
