Briggs, Henry

(1561--1630)

Mathematician, born in Warley Wood, West Yorkshire, N England, UK. He studied at St John's College, Cambridge, and became a fellow in 1588. In 1596 he was the first professor of geometry at Gresham College, London, and in 1619 was professor of geometry at Oxford. He proposed the use of the base 10 for logarithms instead of that (e'='2..717) used by John Napier, and published logarithmic and trigonometric tables to 14 decimal places.
