Cubic Inches Calculator

Cubic inches calculator is used to find the volume of rectangular prisms and boxes in cubic inches. This cubic-inch calculator allows selecting the unit of individual lengths from a diverse dropdown menu.

The result section contains a whole lot of information from the steps to find the volume to the geometrical representation and conversion table.

What are cubic inches?

A cubic inch is a traditional unit of volume used primarily in the United States and countries that utilize the imperial system of measurement. This unit is derived from the linear inch, and it measures the volume of a cube whose sides are each one inch in length.

With roots in the British Weights and Measures Act of the early 19th century, the cubic inch remains relevant in specific contexts and regions even as the metric system becomes more widespread.

Formula to find cubic inch

To calculate the volume of a rectangular object in cubic inches, you simply multiply the object's length, width, and height:

Volume (cubic inches) = length (in) x width (in) x height (in)

How to find cubic inches?

Just make sure that all the measurements are in inches. If the observed data has different units then the volume will not be calculated in cubic inches.

Example

Suppose we have a rectangular box with the following dimensions:

Length: 20 centimeters (cm)

Width: 10 centimeters (cm)

Height: 5 centimeters (cm)

Solution

Step 1: To calculate the volume in cubic inches, we first need to convert the measurements. Since 1 inch is equal to 2.54 centimeters, convert the dimensions using this conversion factor:

Length: 20 cm ÷ 2.54 = 7.87 inches (approximately)

Width: 10 cm ÷ 2.54 = 3.94 inches (approximately)

Height: 5 cm ÷ 2.54 = 1.97 inches (approximately)

Step 2: Now calculate the volume using the formula for the volume of a rectangular prism:

Volume (cubic inches) = Length  × Width × Height

Volume ≈ 7.87 × 3.94 × 1.97 ≈ 61.22 cubic inches (approximately)

Use the cubic inches calculator to skip all of the conversions.

Example

Cubic Feet

1 ft³ = 1,728 in³

3 ft³ = 3 x 1,728 = 5,184 in³

Cubic Yards

1 yd³ = 46,656 in³

2 yd³ = 2 x 46,656 = 93,312 in³

Gallons (US)

1 gal = 231 in³

4 gal = 4 x 231 = 924 in³

Cubic Centimeters

1 in³ ≈ 16.387 cm³

5 in³ ≈ 5 x 16.387 = 81.935 cm³

Liters

61.024 in³ ≈ 1 L

120 in³ ≈ 120 ÷ 61.024 = 1.965 L

Uses of cubic inches

Cubic inches, as a unit of volume measurement, can be applied to various fields. Two common applications that do not involve direct volume calculation are engine displacement and water displacement.

Engine Displacement

In the automotive and mechanical engineering industries, engine displacement represents the combined volume of all cylinders in an engine. Measured in liters or cubic inches, it provides insight into an engine's power output and torque potential

For example, a V8 engine with 350 cubic inches (5.7 liters) of displacement typically has more power than a 4-cylinder engine with 122 cubic inches (2.0 liters) of displacement.

Water Displacement

Water displacement is an application of cubic inches in determining the weight of water in containers or the buoyancy of objects.

Since one cubic inch of water weighs approximately 0.036127 pounds (16.387 grams), this relationship can be used to estimate the weight of water in containers or calculate the buoyancy of submerged objects by accounting for the volume of water they displace.
