What is meant by Momentum?

It is obtained by multiplying the mass and velocity. It is expressed as P and its system international unit is kgm/s with dimension [MLT-1].

Momentum plays a crucial role in collisions and interactions between objects, and total momentum before and after the collision is the same this phenomenon is also known as the law of conservation of momentum.

Formula:

Momentum (P) = (mass)(velocity)

One important property of momentum is that it is conserved in a closed system.

Momentum also has a few important characteristics:

  • Using mass and velocity you can evaluate momentum. A heavier object or a faster-moving object will have greater momentum.
  • This is described by Newton's second law of motion: Force (F) = rate of change of momentum (dp/dt).

How to find momentum with velocity?

Example 1:

Determine the momentum if mass = 12, and Velocity = 9

Solution

M = 12, V = 9, P =?

Formula:

P = mv

Steps:

Now put the values in the above formula:

P = (12) (9)

P = 108 kgm/s

Example 2:

Determine the momentum if mass = 19, and Velocity = 7

Solution

M = 19, V = 7, P =?

Formula:

P = mv

Steps:

Now put the values in the above formula:

P = (19) (7)

P = 133 kgm/s

Example 3:

Determine the momentum if mass = 14, and Velocity = 5

Solution

M = 14, V = 5, P =?

Formula:

P = mv

Steps:

Now put the values in the above formula:

P = (14) (5)

P = 70 kgm/s
