What is negative logarithm function?

The negative logarithm function, often known as the "logarithmic scale" or "-log" function, is used to convert very small numbers or probabilities into more readable or manageable values. It is extensively used in science, engineering, and statistics.

Negative Logarithm Function Formula

To find any number’s negative log, we have to use the formula for simplification. The mathematical expression of the formula is

-(logb(x)) =y

logb(1/x) =y

where

  • b is the base of the log.
  • x is the number that we have to find log.
  • y is the answer to the log.
  • - “sign indicates the negative log.

What is the negative log?

Negative log, often known as the neglog, is the inverse of a number's logarithm. The sign for it is "-log" or "-ln" (for natural logarithm).

For example, if we take the logarithm base 10 of a number x, which is represented by log10(x), then the negative log of x is represented by -log10(x).

Where is the negative log used?

When working with very small probabilities or concentrations, such as in biology, chemistry, or physics, negative logarithms come in handy. They are also used to quantify signal-to-noise ratios in signal processing and engineering, as well as changes in the value of financial assets in finance.

Examples of negative logarithm function

Example 1:

Find the negative log of the 24 with base e.

Solution:

Step 1:  We have to write the formula

-(logb(x)) =y

logb(1/x) =y

Step 2:  Date value from the input

x= 24, b=e, and y=?

Step 3: By putting the value in the above formula

loge(1/24) = -3.178

y=-3.178

Example 2:

Find the negative log of the 137 with base 10.

Solution:

Step 1:  We have to write the formula

-(logb(x)) =y

logb(1/x) =y

Step 2: Date value from the input

x= 137, b=10, and y=?

Step 3: By putting the value in the above formula

loge(1/137) = -2.137

y = -2.137
