What is a paperweight?

The paperweight indicates the mass of a standard-sized sheet of paper, typically measuring 1 square meter or 1 pound. For example, if a piece of paper is labeled as 80 gsm, it means that a square meter of that paper weighs 80 grams.

The paperweight helps individuals and businesses select the appropriate type of paper for their specific needs, ensuring optimal print results and durability for their intended applications.

Formula:

SI unit of gsm is g/m2

Paper weight (gsm) = (Reel weight in kgs × 100,000)/ (paper length × reel width).

Different types of Paperweights

Here are some common weight categories and their typical uses:

Types

Details

Lightweight or Thin Paper:

Generally, ranges from 35 gsm to 70 gsm. It is commonly used for newspapers, magazines, and book pages.

Standard or Office Paper:

Usually between 70 gsm and 100 gsm. It is commonly used for printing documents, photocopying, and general office use.

Cardstock or Heavyweight Paper:

Typically ranges from 100 gsm to 200 gsm. It is thicker and more durable, suitable for business cards, postcards, brochures, and invitations.

Cover or Thick Paper:

Specialty Paper:

Various specialty papers have specific weight ranges depending on their intended use. For example, watercolor paper, craft paper, and photo paper may have different weight requirements.

Examples

Example 1:

Evaluate the gsm if the weight of the reel in kgs = 24, length of paper in meters = 42, and reel width in cms = 46.

Solution

Step 1:

Paper weight (gsm) = (Reel weight in kgs × 100,000)/ (paper length × reel width).

Step 2:

Paper weight (gsm) = (24 × 100000)/ (42 × 46)

Paper weight (gsm) = 2400000/1932 = 1242.23602484

Paper weight (gsm) = 1242.23602484 (gsm)

Newspaper GSM = 35-55 g/m2

A4 paper gsm = 70-80 g/m2

Example 2:

Evaluate the gsm if the weight of the reel in kgs = 25, the length of paper in meters = 30, and the reel width in cms = 15.

Solution

Step 1:

Paper weight (gsm) = (Reel weight in kgs × 100,000)/ (paper length × reel width).

Step 2:

Paper weight (gsm) = (25 × 100000)/ (30 × 15)

Paper weight (gsm) = 2500000/450 = 5555.555555555556

Paper weight (gsm) = 5555.555555555556 (gsm)

Newspaper GSM = 35-55 g/m2

A4 paper gsm = 70-80 g/m2
