Steel Weight Calculator

Steel Weight Calculator is a helpful tool for calculating the weight of various metal shapes made of steel, aluminum, iron, or acetal. This tool allows users to make informed decisions about the amount of steel required for a project.

Note: The calculated weight is an approximation. Actual weights may vary based on specific steel grades and manufacturing tolerances.

How to Calculate the Weight of Steel?

Our steel weight calculator provides fast and reliable calculations in a matter of seconds. If you would prefer to do the calculations yourself, no problem. Here is an explanation that will help you calculate the weight of steel manually.

How to Calculate the Weight of the Steel Sheet or Plate?

sheet

The first step is to find the volume of the steel sheet by using the following formula:

Volume of sheet/plate = Thickness × Width × Length

Multiply the obtained volume by the density to calculate the weight of the plate or steel sheet.

Wight of sheet or plate = Volume × Density

How to Calculate the Weight of the Round Steel Bar?

round steel bar

We need to find the volume of the round bar. It can be done by the following formula.

Volume of round bar = (π/4) × Diameter2 × Length

Now, calculate the weight of the round steel bar by multiplying the obtained volume with density.

Wight of Round Steel Bar = Volume × Density

How to Calculate the Weight of the Rectangular or Square Steel Bar?

 rectangular shape steel bar

Firstly, find the volume of the Rectangle or Square bar using the following formula.

Volume of Square/Rectangular bar = Depth × Width × Length

Next, calculate the weight of the rectangular or square bar by multiplying the obtained volume with density.

Wight of Rectangular or square Steel bar = Volume × Density

How to Calculate the Weight of the Hex Steel Bar?

Use the following formula to calculate the weight of the Hex steel Bar.

Weight of the Hex Steel Bar = ((3√3) / 2) × (width)2 × Length × Density

Tips to keep in mind while using these formulas

  • Use the same units for all dimensions. For example, if the length is in meters, the width and thickness should be in meters.
  • Ensure the measurements are accurate as even small discrepancies can result in significant errors.
  • Double-check that the density value you are using is correct for the steel type.
  • When calculating the weight of a steel sheet or plate, be sure to account for any cutouts or holes that may affect the volume calculation.
  • When using the formula for the volume of a round bar, ensure that the diameter used is the overall diameter, rather than the diameter of the circular cross-section.
  • When using the formula for the volume of a hex steel bar, ensure that the width used is across the flats (i.e., the distance between parallel sides), rather than the distance across opposite corners.

Calculations of Steel Wight

Let’s solve some examples to understand how to evaluate Steel Wight manually.

Example 1:

Find the weight of the mild steel sheet that is 44 m long, 18 m wide, and 0.25 inches thick.

Solution:

Given:

Length = 44m

Width = 18m

Thickness = 0.25 inch = 0.00635 meters (1 inch = 0.0254 meters)

Step 1: Calculate the volume of the steel sheet using the given dimensions:

Volume = Thickness × Width × Length

Volume = 0.00635 m × 18 m × 44 m

Volume = 5.0292 m3

Step 2: The density of steel is typically around 7,850 kg/m³. You can find the density of any common metal in the above densities table.

Step 3:  Multiply the obtained volume by the density to find the weight of the steel sheet. The formula for the weight of the steel sheet is:

Weight = Volume × Density

Weight = 5.0292 m³ × 7850 kg/m³

Weight = 39,479.22 kilograms (kg)

Thus, the weight of the steel sheet that is 44 m long, 18 m wide, and 0.25 inches thick is approximately 39,479.22 kg.

Example 2:

Calculate the weight of a round bar made of cast iron with a diameter of 2 inches and a length of 12 inches.

Solution:

Given:

Length = 12 inch

Diameter = 2 inch

Step 1: Find the volume of the round bar iron.

Volume of round bar = (π/4) × 22 × 12 = 0.7854 × 4 × 12

The volume of the round bar = 37.6992 in3

Step 2: The density of iron is 0.256 pounds per cubic inch (lbs./in3).

Step 3: Now, multiply the volume by the density.

Weight = 37.6992 in3 x 0.256 lbs./in3

Weight = 9.651 pounds/inch3

Therefore, the weight of this round steel bar is 9.651 pounds per inch.
