Absolute value equation calculator

Absolute value equation calculator is a tool used to evaluate any equation's absolute value. This absolute calculator will solve the absolute equation in a couple of seconds with steps.

What is the absolute value equation?

In mathematics, an equation that contains an absolute value expression is known as an absolute value equation. In these equations, the absolute expressions will be present on one or both sides of the equation. Such as:

  • |x + 4| = 3
  • |x – 5| + 4 = 3 + |x – 2|

The general form of the absolute equation is:

|ax + b| = c

The absolute equation will be opened as:

± (ax + b) = c

You have to add and subtract the given terms to get two possible results of the given variable.

How to calculate the absolute value equation?

An absolute equation calculator above is a handy tool to calculate absolute value equations. Alternatively, below is an example of solving them manually.

Example

Find the absolute value of the given function “Abs(x + 2) = 8”.

Solution:

Step 1: Write the given function and subtract 8 from both sides.

 Abs(x + 2) = 8

Abs(x + 2) – 8 = 8 – 8

 Abs(x + 2) – 8 = 0

Write the mathematical sign of the absolute function.

| x + 2 | - 8 = 0

Step 2: Now subtract “|x + 2|” from both sides of the above absolute equation.

|x + 2|− 8 −|x + 2| = 0 − |x + 2|

−8 = −|x + 2|

Step 3: Now by using the definition of the absolute, we get two terms i.e. positive and negative.

For Positive

For Negative

−8 = + [− (x + 2)]

−8 = − (x + 2)

−8 = − x - 2

Rearrange for “x”.

x = - 8 + 2

x = - 6

−8 = - [- (x + 2)]

−8 = + (x + 2)

−8 = x + 2

Rearrange for “x”.

x = - 8 -2

x = -10
