BODMAS Calculator

BODMAS calculator is used to find the result of math expressions by following a sequence of operations. This BODMAS rule calculator takes the math expression and gives the result in a fraction of a second.

What is BODMAS?

BODMAS is a general technique that is used to remember the correct sequence of mathematics symbols while solving math expressions. The BODMAS stands for:

  • B = brackets
  • O = order
  • D = division
  • M = multiplication
  • A = addition
  • S = subtraction

How to solve math expressions using the BODMAS rule?

To solve a math expression by using the BODMAS rule, follow the steps below.

  • First of all, solve the brackets present in the math expression.
  • Solve the order or exponent terms of the math expression.
  • After this, solve the division and multiplication operations from left to right.
  • Lastly, solve the addition and subtraction operations from left to right.

If there is more than one similar operation present in the math expression, then solve the leftmost operation first. The BODMAS is almost similar to the PEMDAS

Let’s take a solved example of the BODMAS rule to understand the concept accurately.

Example

Solve 12 * 3 + (4 – 2) – 4^2 + 18 / 3

Solution

Step 1: Solve the bracket.

= (4 – 2)

= 2

The equation becomes

12 * 3 + 2 – 4^2 + 18 / 3

Step 2: Solve the order or exponent term.

4^2 = 4 x 4

       = 16

The equation becomes

12 * 3 + 2 – 16 + 18 / 3

Step 3: Solve the division and multiplication operation from left to right.

12 * 3 + 2 – 16 + 18 / 3

36 + 2 – 16 + 18 / 3

36 + 2 – 16 + 6

Step 4: Solve the addition and subtraction operations from left to right.

36 + 2 – 16 + 6

38 – 16 + 6

22 + 6

28

Hence,

12 * 3 + (4 – 2) – 4^2 + 18 / 3 = 28

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the BODMAS Rule?

BODMAS rule is a technique that tells which operation applies first in the simplification of any arithmetic expression to moving from left to right in the expression. It has a simple strategy first come apply the operation first. The BODMAS stands is: Brackets, Order, Division, Multiplication, Addition, and Subtraction.

What is the importance of BODMAS?

BODMAS plays an important role in solving complex arithmetic expressions by using the different operations that are used in math or make simplification easy and better.

What do the “S” and “M” represent in BODMAS?

The letter “S” denoted the subtraction operation and the letter “M” denoted the Multiplication operation in the simplification of any expression by BODMAS rule.

What is the difference between BODMAS and PEMDAS?

Both are the same term just used in different regions with different names. PEMDAS rule is used in the US While BODMAS rule is used in India and the UK. But there is no remarkable difference between them. Both follow the same rules to perform any order of operations for brackets, orders, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

What is the use of the BODMAS rule?

The BODMAS rule helps us remember the order of operations in calculations. Operations are simply the different things that we can do to numbers in math’s. It gives the pattern or priority for the operation which applies first on the given expression from left to right.
