What is Prandtl Number?

Prandtl number (Pr) is a dimensionless number. It is the ratio of the kinematic viscosity (ν) of a fluid to its thermal diffusivity (α).

Formula:

Pr = ν/α

Where,

• ν is the kinematic viscosity of the fluid 
• α is the thermal diffusivity of the fluid.

Using the Prandtl number you can determine the behavior of fluids under different temperatures, gradients, and flow conditions.

Example

Calculate the Prandtl number if the Kinematic Viscosity is 10 and Thermal Diffusivity is 16.

Solution

Step 1: Take the given values.

Kinematic Viscosity =10

Thermal Diffusivity = 16

Step 2: Take the formula of the Prandtl number and substitute the values of kinematic viscosity and thermal diffusivity in it.

Pr = ν/α

Pr = 10/16

Pr = 5/8

Pr = 0.625
