What is Schmidt's Number?

It represents the ratio of momentum diffusion to mass diffusion in a fluid. Moreover, it has no dimension and is denoted as “Sc

In mathematical form, it is written as

Sc = v / Dc,

The Prandtl Number's mass transfer equivalent is the Schmidt number. Sc and Pr have comparable values (0.7) in gases, and this is used as the foundation for basic heat and mass transfer analogies.

Schmidt Number:

Sc = v / Dc

Kinematic Viscosity:

v = Sc Dc

Mass Diffusivity:

Dc = v / Sc

Here,

Sc = Schmidt Number,

v = Kinematic Viscosity,

Dc = Mass Diffusivity.

Examples

Example 1:

Evaluate the Schmidt number when Kinematic Viscosity = v = 90 m2/s & Mass Diffusivity = Dc = 15 m2/s

Solution

Using formula:

Sc = v/ Dc

Calculation:

Sc = 90/15

Sc = 6

Schmidt Number = Sc = 6

Example 2:

Evaluate the Mass Diffusivity when Kinematic Viscosity = v = 230 m2/s & Schmidt number = Sc = 5 m2/s

Solution

Using formula:

Dc = v/ Sc

Calculation:

Dc = 230/5

Dc = 46

Mass Diffusivity = Dc = 46
