What is vector subtraction?
Vector subtraction is defined as adding one vector to the negative value of another vector, much like scalar subtraction is defined as adding one scalar to the negative value of another scalar. As is common knowledge, a given vector is multiplied by -1 to create a negative vector.
How to subtract vectors?
Example 1:
Determine the subtraction of Vector A = 3i + 5 j and Vector B = 2i +4j
Solution
A - B = (3i + 5j) – (2i + 4j)
A - B = 3i + 5j - 2i - 4j
A - B = 3i - 2i + 5j - 4j
A - B = i + j
Example 2
Determine the Vector A = 6i + 5j - 4k and Vector B = 4i + 3j +2k
Solution
A - B = (6i + 5j - 4k) - (4i + 3j + 2k)
A - B = 6i + 5j - 4k - 4i - 3j - 2k
A - B = 6i - 4i + 5j - 3j - 4k - 2k
A-B = 2i + 2j - 6k
